Session 3: Spoken Language Systems III

چکیده

Since February 91, the ATIS database has been updated and, in an effort to quickly collect a larger amount of training and test data, a concerted effort has taken place in collecting data at five different sites (AT&T, BBN, CMU, MIT, and SRI). (See [1] for details.) About 10,000 spontaneous utterances were collected, of which about half were annotated (text transcriptions, reference answers, etc.) by December 20. Thus, for the first time since the decision to adopt ATIS as the common task for evaluation, the different sites had available to them sufficient amounts of training data that is similar in nature to the data to be used in testing the systems, albeit the different sites did not have much time to work on the new data before the evaluation was performed.

Spoken Language Systems II

The papers in this session were concerned with higher-level processing in speech recognition systems and, in some cases, the interface between the speech-recognition and natural-language components of a spoken language system. The session consisted of talks from four DARPA sites, Dragon Systems, SRI International, BBN Systems and Technologies, and MIT Lincoln Laboratory. These talks were follow...

Session 3: Human Language Evaluation

* Cross-system evaluation: This is a mainstay of the periodic ARPA evaluations on competing systems. Multiple sites agree to run their respective systems on a single application, so that results across systems are comparable. This includes evaluations such as message understanding (MUC)[6], information retrieval (TREC)[7], spoken language systems (ATIS)[8], and automated speech recognition (CSR...

On the Use of Diary Study to Investigate Avoidance Strategy in Spoken English Courses

In the present study, an attempt is made to investigate the frequency and motives of using avoidance strategies by a group of Iranian intermediate language learners through their own journal writing. The effect of gender on the use of avoidance strategies is to be investigated as well. Thirty nine female and twenty three male learners enrolled in an English language spoken course in a private E...

Session 1: Spoken Language Systems

Without the ability to interpret natural language, speech recognition is suited only for a subset of tasks (though certainly not trivial ones), such as data entry, simple commands or dictation. Similarly, without speech recognition natural language is restricted to the interpretation of written language, a stylized form of human communication. Spoken language systems thus represent an attempt t...
